Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Although it can vary on a case-by-case basis, your child may need to undergo oral and maxillofacial surgery to achieve that perfect, glowing smile.

Sometimes, children are born with certain oral or facial problems that affect their way of living. An underbite, for example, can cause difficulty and discomfort while eating as well as low self-esteem.

Once you take your child on their first dental visit, we will be able to determine whether your child needs oral and maxillofacial surgery.

What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical subspecialty in dentistry that treats abnormalities in the face, jaw, neck, and hard and soft tissues of the mouth. Some common dental and jaw problems that require this type of surgery include:

  • Tooth extractions
  • Misalignment of the jaw
  • Tumors and cysts of the jaw or mouth
  • Cleft lift and palate

This type of surgery may also be used to correct dental injuries or facial trauma from various causes as well as any facial pain or infection.

Common Surgical Procedures

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are a standard and common procedure performed by our dental specialists. For younger children, tooth removal follows specific criteria and process to ensure the best results. In older children, one of the most common reasons for the procedure is the impact of wisdom teeth.

Removing wisdom teeth is usually recommended, even if there aren’t any symptoms present. Our dental specialists will typically perform simple tooth extractions, while more invasive procedures are done by our oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery also referred to as corrective jaw surgery, is a procedure that may be needed if basic orthodontic methods cannot correct a misaligned jaw. This type of surgery may also be used to repair birth defects, like cleft lip and palate surgery, and facial injuries.

During the procedure, our surgeon may reshape or reposition the facial bones and jaw so that the jaw and teeth can be aligned correctly.

Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery

Cleft lip and palate occurs when a baby’s lip and palate do not form properly during pregnancy. It is a common birth defect that can be repaired through surgical treatment. To repair the cleft lip and palate, our surgeon may create incisions on either side of the cleft and stitch muscle and skin tissue together. This closes the cleft on the lip and palate, recreating a regular lip, nose, and palate anatomy.

It is crucial to be consistent with taking your child to the dentist. Doing so ensures your child receives the best treatment for their teeth so that they experience life with a bright smile at all times. Now is the time to take your child to the dentist and ensure they receive the oral and dental care they need.
